choosing your own career path

Growing up as the daughter of a talented fashion designer, many people assumed I would naturally follow in her footsteps. But from a young age, I knew fashion design wasn’t my calling. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love classy dresses. I admire beautiful designs and appreciate the creativity behind them. But making them? That felt like rocket science to me. Does that make me dumb? Definitely not! Whenever I tell people I never wanted to become a fashion designer, they are usually surprised. To them, it seems like the obvious path, especially considering the opportunities the profession offers. But I’ve always desired excellence, and I don’t want to spend my life pursuing a career that doesn’t align with the way God has wired me. The Truth About Career Choices Being the child of a fashion designer doesn’t automatically mean I’ll become one, just as being the child of an engineer doesn’t mean engineering is the right path for that child. I genuinely commend parents who want the very best for their children and encourage them towards careers they believe will secure their future. However, it becomes unhealthy when parents insist on a particular path without considering their child’s interests, gifts, and abilities. As parents, we are stewards, accountable to God for the children He has entrusted to us. Your background, your parents’ occupation, and even people’s expectations may influence the choices presented to you. But they should never replace God’s design for your life. As God’s creation, our career choices should align with the way He has uniquely created us. Wise counsel is valuable, but it should confirm, not replace, God’s direction for our lives. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5 (NIV) Just as a branch flourishes only when it remains connected to the vine, our lives flourish when we stay rooted in God and walk in His purpose for us. So today, take a moment to reflect. What gifts, talents, and abilities has God given you? What kind of work brings out the best in you? Ask God for wisdom and direction. Your future is too important to build on someone else’s expectations.
